Alan Latu: Tackling the big job

14 Feb, 2011 10:32 AM
A chance for a new challenge has prompted Alan Latu’s decision to leave Box Hill Rugby Club after 17 years. Latu has been named the new president of the Power House Rugby Union Football Club in Albert Park. His tenure at Box Hill included five first XV premierships, and state representation.

“I had a great time at Box Hill, winning three premierships back to back with some great mates and family, and now, lifetime friends. I felt it was time to find a different environment to see if I could resurrect my first XV ambitions,” Latu, pictured left, says.

As president and a player, Latu is keen to ensure his new club is headed in the right direction both on and off the field.

Latu is also focused on building the profile of rugby in AFL-mad Melbourne.

‘‘We hope to attract more players and rugby fanatics to our local clubs to help build participation within Victoria,’’ he says.

Bryan Scott has been named Power House’s first grade captain for 2011. Scott also trains with the Melbourne Rebels’ B-squad.

He is one of a just a handful of Victoria-based players invited to train with the Rebels’ wider training group.

“I hope to take the knowledge and skills I have learnt from the Rebels’ wider training group back to Power House Rugby Club,” Scott, pictured far left, says.

Latu says he is excited about his new responsibility as president, and he’s looking forward to launching into his 17th season of rugby this year.

‘‘By being in a positive environment and [with] specific training, I am enjoying my rugby more in my 30s than I did in my 20s.’’
