Stonnington food breaches hard to swallow

Stonnington food breaches hard to swallow

20 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
BREACHES of food safety standards in Stonnington's cafes and restaurants have doubled over the past year.

Stonnington council issued orders against 40 restaurants and cafes in 2011 for food safety breaches, ranging from pest control to cleanliness and food handling practices. In 2010 a similar number of inspections by environmental health officers found just 20 breaches.

Stonnington council chief executive Warren Roberts said the council could not explain the dramatic increase in breaches last year.

The latest figures follow an incident at the Mission Cafe on Chapel Street involving a customer who claims to have found a cockroach in a croissant bought there.

The customer, who did not wish to be named, took photos of the insect imbedded in the croissant

Mission Cafe hospitality operations manager Chris Levy said the cafe bought its croissants from a commercial bakery and had not experienced any previous problems. However, he said the cafe was taking the claim extremely seriously and had immediately cancelled its orders from the bakery.

"It's something that I don't brush under the carpet," he said.

He refused to reveal the identity of the bakery, but said it had been an approved supplier.

The cafe is run by the Prahran Mission to raise money for its work with the disadvantaged.

Mr Roberts said council officers inspected every registered food premises annually and issues orders to restaurants and cafes which fail to comply with the Australian Government Food Standards Code. Any commercial kitchen operator issued with an order was expected to take action to improve food safety.

Last year 38 of the 40 offenders complied with the orders. The two which did not comply were prosecuted in the Magistrate's Court. Another restaurant was ordered to close. The council would not name the offending premises for privacy reasons.

Mr Roberts said routine food safety inspections were unannounced and council officers and additional inspections also occurred when council received complaints about a premises or food quality.

He said the council would investigate the Mission Cafe following the cockroach incident.

Stonnington will launch a FoodSafe program next month to recognise some of the 1300 food service providers who comply with health standards. Recognised premises will be given a certificate and a sticker to display in their window.

It is no excuse for the cafe to entirely blame the bakery (although the bakery must share the blame). The serving staff should have noticed the cockroach if it was on the outside of the croissant. This is like a waiter blaming the kitchen staff for putting a dirty glass on the table.

The Article "Stonnington food breaches..." just goes to show the stupidity of our so called "privacy laws".

What a joke for the Council to say "...The council would not name the offending premises for privacy reasons..."

People have the right to know the quality of food offered for sale...the more knowledge the better.

Hiding behind "privacy legislation" is just pathetic. These rules need to be changed.

Really -- a cockroach in your croissant, Sir?

Shhhhhh. Everyone will want one.

That's not a cockroach. It's a cunningly fashioned chocolate chip carved into a small and perfectly formed likeness of a roach.

Chapel Street eateries are not all they are cracked up to be. Unless you go to a reputable place you may as well play Russian Roulette with your stomach. I went into one, we ordered a drink and I went to the ladies room. Walked out there and then. You can't hire cheap labour and expect cleaning standards to be 100%.

It looks like the cockroach has been placed on the croissant and then referred to the papers for a story. Certainly hoping the complaint was properly investigated by those qualified (considering its an anonymous complainant) and a charge of guilty proven before the story went to print. If not, look out for a defamation charge against the paper.

I think that every offender should be named and shamed for our benefit and the benefit of other businesses

I have eaten at many food establishments both in Chapel St and around the world. The Mission Cafe is one the few with consistently pristine cleanliness, warm and friendly service - not to mention the best coffee in Prahran - they're really outstanding. These guys run a Cafe to help the homeless and disadvantaged and now they're being singled out for an item they didn't make! Where's the fairness in that? Oh yes - James and Peter - I'm not convinced that you'd carp so righteously if it was your Cafe.

Food Safety Programs - diddly squat! Years ago there were 4 inspections per year. Not all Councils do inspections unannounced. There have been more outbreaks of food poisoining since FSP's were introduced and some never made public. anyone can handle your food without training - What a joke.

Food Standards Code - Get 4 Environmental Health Officers and you'll get 4 different sets of standards for setting up a food shop.

A classic example is hands free wash hand basins. Not required but they still tell you to put one in. Health Departments are a liability to Councils and are under resourced.
