Shedding light on stereotypes

18 Apr, 2011 10:59 AM
PHOTOJOURNALIST Gemma-Rose Turnbull has spent the past 12 months interviewing and photographing sex workers for the Red Light Dark Room: Sex, Lives and Stereotypes project.

Her work has been published in a hardcover book and the photographs featured in an exhibition drawn from more than 250 rolls of film. Ms Turnbull said the contributions made by the women were ‘‘priceless’’.

“It paints a rare picture of real women, with real hearts, who care about family, have friendships, hobbies, skills and dreams,’’ she said.

The book is on sale at the exhibition and at Readings bookshops. All profits will be donated to St Kilda Gatehouse, which provides support and diversion programs for sex workers.

The exhibition will run until April 27 at the Alliance Francaise de Melbourne, 57 Grey Street, St Kilda.
