Middle Park peak hour rat run hoon ire

13 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
A "RAT-RUN" between Canterbury Road and Beaconsfield Parade in Middle Park is angering residents on the connecting street.

McGregor Street resident David Sofra said motorists were driving with a "hoon driving mentality" as they looked for ways to avoid peak hour traffic on their way to and from work.

"They cut corners; they don't give way to pedestrians, joggers and cyclists and the families here too," he said.

Mr Sofra said he met with Port Phillip council engineers last year, who had suggested narrowing the street's entrance from Canterbury Road to slow motorists.

He said the council had installed a counter, showing the street received an average of 1800 cars per day.

"The counter didn't measure speed, it only measured traffic. My issue isn't just with the volume of traffic, which is high, but also the speed of traffic," Mr Sofra said.

Port Phillip mayor Rachel Powning said the council planned to conduct another survey this month to assess McGregor Street's safety issues.

Get a life some of you McGregor St residents. The so called "rat run" is just people going home.

A few years ago some McGregor St residents whinged and got a silly round-a-bout installed at the corner of McGregor St and Richardson St at great expense, so what more do you want. You also have times parking restriction on public roads which is unnecessary and ridiculous.

Why don't some of you drive or walk to Armstrong St shops and get a nice meal and enjoy yourselves instead.

Finally someone is taking a stance on this issue and full credit to Mr Sofra for his persistence.

What is the point of "another survey" when everybody knows this intersection is an issue?

Rachel Powning - please rectify it!!

As a Middle Park resident of 25 years, I have noticed this issue has slowly become out of hand. The council has built curb extensions on most other intersections to slow down traffic, but has not done the same in McGregor St. Common sense tells us that the council should build a curb extension on McGregor St aswell.

As a property owner of McGregor St near the intersection of Canterbury Rd, I witness first hand the impact of a high volume of motorists using McGregor St as a 'rat run'. However, the more important impact I need to highlight is the issue of safety caused by the way in which motorists aggresively drive along McGregor St upon turning off Canterbury Rd. On numerous occassions the Police via '000' have been called to attend to hoon behaviour along McGregor St.

The City of Port Phillip have not given this issue the attention it warrants, in fact they have basically ignored rate payer concerns for 12 months. Their approach and lack of responsive has not been acceptable. The volume and behaviour of motorists at the intersection of McGregor St and Canterbury Rd is an accident waiting to happen. It is the council responsibility that simple measures are put in place to deter and control the behaviour of motorists, not VicRoads, nor the Police! Due to the Council's lack of action, it makes us residents question their motives and usefulness.

Safer traffic conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and residents of Middle Park!!!

C'mon City of Port Phillip, what does it take?? Put the priority of residents first for once!!

McGregor Street is a residential street, and the safety of pedestrians and residents is paramount.

I have noticed that Middle Park and Albert Park is filled with speed bumps, roundabouts and traffic islands to help control and facilitate through traffic. These traffic deterrents are obviously missing from the Canterbury Road and McGregor Street intersection and I urge the City of Port Phillip to implement these much-needed safety initiatives. Do it now before more accidents and near misses occur.

Unfortunately I have been the witness of incidents and ‘near misses’ due to the unsafe traffic conditions at the intersection of McGregor Stree and Canterbury Road.

Cyclists and pedestrians travelling on Canterbury Road (in the city direction) are “cut off” by speeding motorists turning right from Canterbury Road (heading in the St Kilda direction) into McGregor Street who “take” on approaching traffic and speed up as a result.

Cyclists are not the only ones who should be concerned, its families and children who walk these paths as well.

This is not merely an issue during peak hour traffic.

Yesterday a teenage pedestrian was struck and killed in a hit-and-run south-east of Melbourne. Is this what we are waiting for?

- Do you enjoy a healthy stroll throughout Middle Park and Albert Park?

- Do you occasionally cycle?

- Do you walk the children to school?

- Do you walk the dog?

If you answered 'Yes' to any of the above, this issue is relevant to you!

Are the motorist driving within the speed limit, I think so. So what is the problem has anyone been run over; no and I live near by in Richardson St. I personally think 40kph should be the speed limit in residential streets and have told the council so on a few occasions but this policy should be state wide and not ad hoc. There are over a dozen streets similar to McGregor in Middle Park that traverse between Canterbury Rd and Beaconsfield Pde. Get used to it, there are more car in peak hour. That are what roads are for to get people to their destination.
