WHEN musicians Mark and Elena Mogilevski met at the Kharkov Conservatory in Russia in 1972, they couldn’t have imagined that their ability to make sweet music together would lead to love and the chance to perform in Moscow, St Petersburg, Portugal and France.
The couple moved to Australia in 1995 and have performed at the Melbourne Festival, the ABC Classic FM’s Sunday Live program, the Adelaide International Arts Festival and more.
Mark Mogilevski, a violinist, shares his passion for music as a lecturer at the University of Melbourne. Many of his students have gone on to win prestigious awards and scholarships.
In March, four violin students, Chloe Law, 14, Alanna Scaramella, 17, Tim Yu, 14 and Thomas Lo, 22, will perform alongside Mogilevski and his pianist wife, Elena.
The concert of classical music, presented by the Russian Cultural and TV Association – Sputnik, will feature works by Ravel, Bizet, Lalo, Brahms and Franck.
‘‘They are highly difficult pieces,’’ Mogilevski says, adding that the students’ mastery over the pieces highlights the bright future awaiting them.
‘‘All the music requires technique of real concert performers.’’
But his students are comfortable performing in front of large audiences, and even the youngest carry themselves like seasoned professionals, he says.
Law and Yu – both just 14 – are already award winners.
Law, for example, has performed at the Melbourne Town Hall with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra during a concert series called Meet the Music, while Yu travelled to China to perform with the Scotch College Symphony Orchestra in 2010.
Mogilevski admits that he and his talented students still experience the occasional bout of nerves, but he insists that’s natural for live performers.
‘‘We love music and that’s what’s most important.’’
The Violin Music Festival is at the Glen Eira Arts Centre, corner Hawthorn and Glen Eira roads, Caulfield, from 5pm on Saturday, March 3. Tickets from $20. For more information and bookings, call 9593 8137.
