Barber seeks to slash 'doorings'

23 Jan, 2012 01:00 AM
PEOPLE who carelessly open their car doors and injure a cyclist may soon end up losing their licence.

Greens Northern Metropolitan MLC Greg Barber, will introduce a private member's bill into parliament next month to amend the Road Safety Road Rules 2009.

Currently, anyone who causes an accident by opening a vehicle door or leaving a vehicle door open can be fined three penalty units. Mr Barber, wants it increased to 10 penalty units.

It follows a sharp increase in the number of "dooring" incidents since 2009, according to VicRoads data.

"Cycling's growing fast, but accidents aren't growing at the same rate. But this particular type of accident is and it continues to rise," Mr Barber said.

"Doorings" are now the fourth most-common accident involving cyclists.

The state government controls both houses of parliament and its support will be essential for the bill to pass.

If councils and government stopped placing bike lanes so close to parallel parked cars this "dooring" issues would not exist. Cars need to say 1 metre from bikes but bikes also need to stay 1 metre from cars, be they in motion or parked.
